Name: Macarena Corral
Movement Minneapolis team member since: 2012 or 2013?
Role at the Movement: Yoga Coach
What’s your athletic/fitness background?
I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher certification in 2010 and began teaching shortly after. I have been trained in Vinyasa, Sculpt, and Clubbell Yoga.
What brought you to The Movement? Do you remember your first workout here and what you thought of it?
Jen Worley had recently joined and she kept talking about it and convinced me to tag along one day. I remember the first workout I was very skeptical about the whole biofeedback but I loved how relaxed the environment was. I had never really enjoyed lifting weights, but I was definitely looking for a fitness community (even though I may not have known it at the time).
What’s been the biggest change for you since joining the Movement?
What does being “strong” mean for you? How do you see strength manifest in yourself and others?
Being brave. Being brave to try new things, to talk to new people, to put myself out there in different ways. To overcome. To live and not just to survive.
Tell us about your most memorable PR.
My most memorable PR to date is giving birth to my daughter. I endured pain that I never thought I could do. I have never felt as strong or proud of myself as I did that day.
Do you have a favorite exercise/workout/training style? If so, what is it?
I love Saturday morning circuits.
How about your least favorite exercise/workout?
Do you prefer training solo or with a partner/team?
Definitely with people! It makes anything I am doing so much more doable, and actually enjoyable.
When did you know you were hooked?
When most of the hours given to my nanny in a month were for me to go to Movement.
If you could tell people one thing about The Movement, what would it be?
I would tell people that it’s more than just a gym. It’s a community built of some of the strongest people I have met, not just physically, but people who are constantly trying to make themselves or others/the world better. Starting my practice was so daunting but it was so much easier given all the help that I received from members and coaches, it really was a team effort to get me started and I am so beyond grateful.
How do you spend your days when you’re not at the gym?
I’m very busy when I am not at the gym (and sometimes even when I am at the gym!). I have a beautiful 22-month-old little girl that wont stop moving, so I spend a lot of my time running after her at the park! I also recently started my own mental health private practice. (Another PR for me!) My husband and I are big foodies so we love trying all new restaurants in town or cooking up a storm at home. Have I mentioned my love for wine with friends? And of course, going to yoga classes at Tarana with the fabulous Jeffrey!
What do you think people would be surprised to know about you?
I was a competitive swimmer and gymnast when I was a kid. A lot of people are also shocked to learn I’m not from the US.
Any secret/hidden talents or hobbies?
I am REALLY good at air hockey.
What’s your favorite post-workout meal?
Anything, I am usually starving!
What are you training for/what’s your next training goal?
I really want to get certified in Acro Yoga, which requires me to get more comfortable with inversions, which have historically made me very scared. So, my main goal is to learn how to hold a headstand for 1 minute and how to do a handstand period.
How can people find/connect with you?
I am on Instagram (@macarenacorral) and Facebook!
