What’s your athletic/fitness background?
BAND CAMP! I didn’t become athletic until my late 20s and early 30s when something clicked in my head that I loved the outdoors and moving my body. Growing up I didn’t think I had the body for athletics so I developed my brain instead. I was introduced to rock climbing and canoeing/kayaking through my husband and it spiraled into a love of exercise in general and lifting in particular.
Biggest change for you since joining the Movement:
Believing in myself. Sounds odd, because I was very confident in my abilities but didn’t always believe in myself. Once I started training for competition and competing that feeling of accomplishment permeated the rest of my life.
Tell us about your most memorable PR.
It was my 330-pound deadlift at the 2015 MN Senior State Championship. I felt so good going into the lift and it pulled off the ground so easily I couldn’t believe I had done it. I was ecstatic!
Do you have a favorite exercise/workout/training style?
Powerlifting! I love everything about it.
How about your least favorite exercise/workout?
Burpees or anything that involves a lot of cardio. I’m a sprinter not a runner!
Do you prefer training solo or with a partner/team?
I prefer training with a partner or team – it’s so much fun to share experiences, get tips, and be social.
When did you know you were hooked?
I knew I was hooked when I went to watch the 2015 MN State Open where there was a great turnout for Team Green. I wanted to be lifting and competing and was jealous watching everyone have so much fun. I decided then and there that I would train for the next meet — and I did and I haven’t looked back since.
How do you spend your days when you’re not at the gym?
Lots of ways — I test software for a living so I work a lot. But when I’m not working I enjoy the outdoors (in ALL seasons) by hiking, bicycling, kayaking, shooting archery, visiting art galleries, and finding beauty in all the trees I see. One of my all-time favorite activities is travel.
What do you think people would be surprised to know about you?
I’ve climbed Devil’s Tower three times and am afraid of heights.
What are you training for/what’s your next training goal?
2016 Twin Ports Raw Open on June 11, and the 2016 USA Powerlifting Raw Nationals. My big goal for the year is to hit a 400-pound deadlift!
How can people find/connect with you?
Advice for people starting out:
Do what you love and don’t compare yourself to anyone else out there. As long as you love it, you will find a way to succeed.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I’m a late bloomer when it comes to athletics and I’m loving every minute of it. I’m extremely grateful that I found a place like Movement Minneapolis because the coaches and members are a family, a tribe. We celebrate victories and soothe disappointments and in general lift each other up to make everyone stronger. There is a lot of joking and fun but in all seriousness we want everyone to benefit from being part of a larger collective. I’m incredibly thankful for all the friends I’ve made here.
